When you’re new to vaping, choosing a vape device can be a little daunting. There’s a lot of variety between the different types of vapes, so it’s helpful to know what you’re looking at before you buy. In this article, we’re going to explore three different types of vaping devices: disposable vape devices, vape pens, and vape mods, so that you can choose the best vape for you. 

1. Disposable Vapes

Disposable vape pens have recently become quite popular with vapers, particularly as a backup device for those on the go. They can be a good place to start if you’re thinking about making the switch from smoking to vaping, as they’re seen as a low-commitment device and come ready to use.

What is a disposable vape?

Disposable vape devices have been created for ease of use and require no initial setup. Most other devices require a charged battery and come with either an empty tank that you would need to fill with e Liquid or with separate e Liquid pods.

Disposable devices are available over the counter and ready to use. They are pre-charged and come with the e Liquid already within the device.

How to use a disposable vape

Disposable vapes are considered one of the easiest types of devices to use. Put simply, you take the device out of its packaging, bring the device to your lips and inhale if it’s draw-activated - just like you would a cigarette. If the device is button-activated, you’ll just need to press the button before you take a puff. 

Is a disposable vape right for you?

There are plenty of reasons why people choose disposable vape devices. Sometimes they’re cheaper than non-disposable vapes, they require no initial setup and they’re an easy and convenient option for when you’re on the go. They allow new users to try vaping before committing to buying a vape device, or they can be a simple backup option for an experienced vaper who wants to leave their main device at home.

2. Vape Pens

If you’re new to vaping, a vape pen (also known as a pod vape) is likely to be the best option for your first device. Most people who choose to make the switch and take up vaping, start with a vape pen because they're affordable (with a relatively low set-up cost), they’re easy to use, require little to no maintenance and you can enjoy a wide range of e Liquid flavours and nicotine strengths. 

What is a vape pen?

A vape pen is normally made up of a battery, tank, coil, mouthpiece, and a USB port for charging. Some devices also have a battery indicator and airflow controller. Earlier vape pen versions looked like a regular pen hence the name, but modern vape pens have a more pod-like shape and are often referred to as pod vapes, but they both function very similarly. 

Modern vape pens will either have a refillable e Liquid tank or they will come with pre-filled e Liquid pods that click into place. If you’re using a refillable vape pen, you will need to do some maintenance from time to time such as replacing the coil and tank. Pod vape pens that take pre-filled e Liquid pods are relatively low maintenance, the pod will simply need to be replaced once you run out of e Liquid.

How to use a vape pen

Most vape pens are designed as mouth-to-lung vape devices, where the user inhales the vapour into their mouth before it’s drawn down into the lungs. If your vape pen has adjustable airflow, it might be suitable for direct-to-lung vaping, however, this vaping technique is usually done with a mod device.

3. Vape Mods

Vape mods are the largest and most powerful type of vaping device and tend to be used by experienced vapers. As the name suggests, these types of devices can be modified to suit your vaping style. These modifications could be for the battery, the tank or even the coil. 

What is a vape mod?

A vape mod generally consists of a mouthpiece, sub-ohm coil, tank, fire button, and a large battery. They will have adjustable features such as; airflow control, temperature control, and variable voltage/wattage, allowing the user more control over their vaping experience.

Vape mods tend to be heavier, bulkier devices (due to the size of the battery) and they come with advanced features. These advanced features come in all shapes and sizes. It could be that the battery is larger and therefore lasts longer or that the tank can hold more e Liquid than usual. Most of these advanced features are all centred around vapour production, allowing the user to create bigger vape clouds. Vape mod devices are designed for direct-to-lung vaping. 

How to use a vape mod

Provided your vape mod is assembled, your battery is fully charged, and the tank has been filled with your chosen e Liquid, then all you need to do is turn your vape mod on.  This can vary from device to device, so check your user instructions manual for details.

Once the device is on, the LED screen will light up. Then you can adjust the voltage and temperature settings on your device if you so wish. If you’re using the device for the first time, it’s best to start on the lowest settings and work your way up. This way you’ll be able to get a feel of what wattage and temperature are right for you.

When you’re ready to inhale, hold the fire button down while you inhale the vapour from the mouthpiece. This should happen almost immediately. Avoid holding the button down for too long as this can cause damage to the coil. Once you’ve finished vaping always remember to turn your vape mod off. 

Is a vape mod right for you?

If you’re an experienced vaper that knows exactly what you want from your vaping experience and you want to be able to customise your device to suit your needs, then a vape mod is likely to be the best option for you.

However, if you’re an ex-smoker looking to make the switch, then a vape mod is probably not a good place to start for the following reasons:

• - Vape mods are advanced pieces of vaping tech. Whereas vape pens and pod vapes are simple to use and maintain, vape mods are more complex to operate and require a higher level of maintenance.
• - Vape mods are designed for direct-to-lung vaping. The majority of ex-smokers will prefer mouth-to-lung vaping, as this is the preferred vaping style that closely mimics the act of smoking.
• - Vape mod devices are designed to use low nicotine e Liquid rather than nic salts. This allows the user to inhale large clouds of vapour without experiencing a strong hit on the throat. But you may struggle to get a similar level of nicotine hit when compared to smoking a cigarette.

What is the best vape for beginners?

When you’re new to something, you need to keep it simple. If you’re looking to make the switch from smoking to vaping, a vape pen is a good place to start. Vape pens are easy to use, they’re small enough to take with you on the go, and they are generally easy to maintain.

Once you’ve got the hang of your vape pen, you can branch out and experiment with different flavours and nicotine strengths.
